Evil empire

photographs from Russia and Poland

Wherever we might travel with a camera we are allways looking through a glass tinted with our preconceptions of the country and its people. And in acknowledging this I have found that I have perhaps tried in these photographs to find evidence of the Soviet Union of my childhood memories. Of bread lines in snowy Moscow mixed with Hollywood stereotypes. But Reagans famous quote seems ridiculous when you wander the streets of St. Petersburg, or the Old Town in Warsaw today.

So this is not a documentary work, but a personal journey to a part of the world that fascinates me, knowing all too well that I might have photographed it with my imagination as much as with my camera.
